Visiting The Fells Historic Estate and Garden

I finally got a chance to visit The Fells Historic Estate and Garden in New London, NH.  On a beautiful early summer day I went with my family to tour the house and garden.  This was the summer estate of John Hays, private secretary to Abraham Lincoln and eventual Secretary of State under Presidents McKinley and Roosevelt. The estate overlooks Lake Sunapee and is on the National Register of Historic Places and is preserved by the Garden Conservancy.

The front entrance with a beautiful stone wall enclosing a gravel entry court. A beautiful example of balance and creating a sense of arrival.

Side view of the house and terrace with sweeping lawn

View of mountains in the distance. The Yew hedge is an effective transition that does not obstruct the beautiful view

The back yard features a stone wall, perennial garden and a Yew hedge which is a successful way to separate the manicured landscape from the meadow and woodland edge

My daughter and mother in law, enjoying the garden!
