Touring Gardens of Central Florida with the APLD

Last week I was in Orlando for the annual conference of the APLD (Association of Professional Landscape Designers).  It is one of my favorite weeks of the year, where I get to connect with designers from all around the country (and world), hear great speakers, see gardens and generally leave feeling refreshed and inspired.

This year we toured 15 different gardens in one day (a very tiring day).  Here are some images from my favorite gardens.

A huge Agave, and Helen for scale

A traditional, no lawn front yard, with a brick walkway and circular landing. The hardscape does a great job of creating structure and form amongst the plantings.

A tall stand of clumping bamboo gives a contemplative feeling to this garden.

Simple, geometric paving and a water feature creates a great transition from the deck to the yard

I love this curved, raised deck, a simple way to create a real destination in a small yard

My favorite of the day, the large scale paving and beach stones create a dramatic entrance to this modern home

Designers discussing the water table (when turned on a sheet of water pours from under the table into the slot in the decking)

Perfect indoor/outdoor integration. The living room of this house spills right onto the patio, which leads right down the steps of the pool.

It was a great trip!  I’m glad to be home, of course, but can’t help looking forward to exploring Washington DC at next year’s conference!
