Historic Iron Work – Looking at the Details

I have some wonderful clients who are building a new home in Concord (an historic town west of Boston).  Their front steps are beautiful slab granite, and we’ve been talking about what kind of railing would look substantial enough for the front entrance, and also have a bit of historic character.  Since our conversation on this topic, I’ve been obsessively looking at iron railings, fences and details.

I took a walk around my neighborhood yesterday and snapped a few pictures (all within a 1 block radius!).  These images show amazing craftsmanship and surprising patterns (I wish I could design a textile line with some of these pattern inspirations).

If you are considering an iron fence, gate, railing, handrail, fire escape or even window well grates, here are some ways to bring in beautiful detail to those otherwise functional elements of your home.
