Extending the Garden Season in New England

The nights are getting a bit chilly and the sun seems to be setting much too early; yep it’s fall in New England.  That doesn’t mean you have to head indoors, though;  with a few considerations there’s still plenty of time left in the season to enjoy your outdoor space.

A few cozy blankets make all the difference
I think the two most important elements to consider are light and warmth.  There is a wide range of options for providing light and warmth in the garden; fireplaces, fire pits, space heaters, a good lighting design, etc.  All of these are great solutions and can add a beautiful, built in feel to your garden.

On a much simpler level, though, you probably already have all the elements you need to enjoy your outdoor space through October.  Take some candles from your living room or dining room outside.  One is great, a cluster is even better.  And, grab a few blankets to drape over chairs for you and your guests.  There’s nothing better than a blanket over your shoulders on a cool night.  Simple, effective, and cozy.

If you’re looking for permanent outdoor lighting, check out Hubbardton Forge.  They make gorgeous, hand crafted light fixtures in Vermont.   For outdoor lanterns and candle holders, the collections from Restoration Hardware are a great option.

If you like the blanket idea, and want a touch of luxury, the throw blankets from Swan Island are perfect for fall in New England.  For an option that’s a bit more budget friendly, I love the look of these blankets from Gallant and Jones.

All you really need to do, though, is grab what you already have, head outdoors, and enjoy the fall!
